Are you a foreigner who has experienced having to move out from Indonesia and then come back again because this is an obligation to be able to extend your nearly-expired residence (stay) permit in Indonesia? It is surely tiring and costly.
But now you can be less worried since the Directorate-General of Immigration at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights has implemented a Transitional Residence Permit known as the Bridging Visa. This transitional permit is a ‘bridge’ during the time period required to obtain a new residence permit.
According to the Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation No. 11 of 2024 on the Amendment to the Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation No. 22 of 2023 (“Regulation”), a Transitional Residence Permit is given to foreigners as a limited stay permit without having to leave the territory of Indonesia.

Article 86A of the Regulation stipulates that the validity period of the Transitional Residence Permit is 60 days (cannot be extended) and is only be given if:
- the foreigner is in the territory of Indonesia (Article 94A (1));
- the application is submitted by a Foreigner, Guarantor, or Person in Charge from within the territory of Indonesia to the Director-General of Immigration (Article 94A (1));
- the previous residence permit is still valid, and the application is submitted at least 3 days before it expires (Article 94A (4));
This Regulation provides that Foreigners wishing to use a Transitional Residence Permit must follow certain procedures:
